The following principles are set forth to provide the membership of Hudson Heritage Association (hereafter "HHA") with a basis for evaluating any ongoing or future proposals whose outcome may serve to change the historic character or aesthetic appeal of Hudson forever. These principles shall serve as an addendum to the objectives outlined in our Articles of Incorporation and Code of Regulations* by giving special attention to issues specific to the City of Hudson, Ohio, as of the date of amendment of this Statement of Purpose.
This Expanded Statement of Purpose shall serve as a guideline for those members attending local government meetings in the capacity of representatives of HHA.
HHA recognizes the importance of the concept of the total Hudson community and strives to maintain its ideals and achieve its objectives within the entire originally platted 25 square miles. This oneness of spirit is vital to the survival of Hudson community, as we currently know it.
HHA recognizes the harmful effect of intense vehicular traffic on the distinctive character of the community, particularly at the Village center, and supports the creation and adoption of plans that would decrease vehicular congestion, as long as such plans remain consistent with the existing Historic atmosphere and general ambience of the community.
HHA supports improving the viability of the existing historic commercial corridor (North Main Street) as long as such plans do not adversely affect the historic value or aesthetic appeal of that area.
HHA recognizes the potential harmful impact of uncontrolled growth on the community and the environment, and opposes any changes to zoning, which would allow increases in the intensity of land use throughout all zoning categories.
HHA supports legislative changes that would cause governing bodies to give greater consideration to issues of historic significance and a lesser priority to growth-related economic concerns.
HHA affirms its support of the established Architectural and Historic Board of Review and urges it to continue to ensure strict adherence to the highest design standards throughout Hudson, in addition to exercising its power to preserve and protect historic districts and landmarks.
HHA affirms its support of the recognition, authentication and protection of all historically or significant structures throughout the community, and urges the adoption of legislation which would aid in continuing this process.
HHA supports the diligent and consistent follow-up to decisions made by all governing bodies and the resultant strict enforcement of the same.
HHA supports the preservation of trees, and favors legislation that would serve to prohibit the destruction of explicit specimens as established by the species, stature or historic prominence. In addition, HHA supports the creation, adoption and strict enforcement of any ordinances designed to preserve significant stands of trees, which, by the removal, would unduly impact the existing natural landscape of the community. (Example: roadway corridors, natural green backdrops, visual barriers or sound effects)
HHA recognizes the value to the community of the designated Historic Districts and the protection afforded them. HHA supports surveys of historic areas or studies of historic structures, which may lead to the appropriate expansion of the Historic District or the creation of similar districts elsewhere in Hudson.
HHA recognizes the significant value to the community of Hudson's established aesthetic quality and supports all existing and future ordinances, which may serve to protect or heighten this appeal. Furthermore, HHA urges the strict and immediate enforcement of all ordinances designed to protect the aesthetic quality.
*A copy of the HHA Code of Regulations, as adopted at a special meeting of the members on July 8, 1962, and subsequent amendments through June 8, 1995, is on file at the HHA headquarters.
